Agricultural Training for AIDS Orphans

Project Leader:

Sister Mewoulou Marie Thérèse Brigit

Nearly 7% of the adult population in Cameroon is affected by HIV/AIDS. The number of children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS-has increased from 13,000 in 1995 to more than 300,000 in 2010. Hope Center in Yaounde, Cameroon, cares for children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic, and has done so since the late 1990’s. Children who have lost their caregivers due to AIDS are rejected by society and are often unable to attend school. Through a partnership with a school of agriculture nearby, Sister Marie is raising money so that ten Hope Center children can attend the Practical School of Agriculture in Binguela. When they graduate, they will not only be able to provide for their own basic needs, but also be able to help feed their community.
