COAR Children’s Village is the Community Oscar Arnulfo Romero, in Zaragoza, El Salvador. COAR Children's Village was founded at the onset of the Salvadoran Civil War in 1980 by Fr. Ken Myers, a priest from the Diocese of Cleveland Latin American Mission Team, to shelter and care for displaced children and war orphans. In 1982, he was joined in his mission by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, Texas. The sisters remained a vital force at COAR until 2009, when the management of the Children's Village was turned over to the Archdiocese of San Salvador. In more recent years, COAR has evolved into a residential foster care home for the most vulnerable children in Salvadoran society - victims of intrafamilial violence, extreme poverty, and gang conflicts. Our goal is to help the residents overcome their traumas through care for the whole child, mind, body, and spirit, so that they can become agents of change in their society. COAR Peace Mission also helps to support a school and clinic on the same grounds, which the residents attend.
