Feeding Families Affected by COVID-19, Kenya

Project Leader:

Reverend Daniel Kiriti

Since 2012, Empower the World Foundation (EWF) is a registered Non-Governmental Organization aimed at empowering orphans and vulnerable children with education through provision of scholarships in secondary school and post-secondary. EWF works towards changing the lives and future of bright children living in a desolate life of poverty through financing their education. Many children lose hope since they cannot afford school fees to continue with higher education especially orphans and destitute children. Our scholars come from families with unique needs with most of them being either orphaned or have single parents (mothers). The closure of schools meant that children stay at home full time which has increased the cost of living in their families especially now that they can’t rely on food programs in schools. A gift of $25 can help feed a family of four for a week.

Parish youth helping in food packaging

The second face we identified 100 families. These families consisted of those from which our scholars come from. We asked the families what they would like us to buy them and their answers were used to procure dry maize grains, beans, rice, and wheat flour, cooking oil and bar soaps. We tasked the parish youth to package the food so it could be easier during sharing. Each basket contained 5kg of rice,4 kg of wheat flour, 10kg of maize grains, 3L of cooking oil, 10kg of beans and a bar soap. The list, as stated above, was put together in consultation with families to identify their most important needs and consists of the ingredients for their everyday Kenyan dishes. This would feed a family of 6 for about a month.

Showing the stent inserted to aid in dialysis, she says, “We sold everything to have the procedure take place. We had nothing left and now this…., Thanks be to God. Tell Fr. Kiriti, Asante Sana (thank you very much)”.
