Dominican Friars from the US were sent to East Africa in 1991 to plant the Order of Preachers. Today there are three communities: the formation house for our student brothers and our parish of St. Catherine of Siena are in Nairobi and the Dominican Novitiate is in Kisumu, the third-largest city in Kenya.Formation is our most important ministry, and, over time, various ministries have grown out of these communities. We welcome young men to discern if they are called to the Dominican way of life. In addition to their studies at the seminary, we provide our student brothers with experience in our ministries, so that they will one day assume responsibility for all pastoral, administrative, and formation activities of our mission and minister to the people in their communities as preachers.Recently, St. Martin de Porres Priory in Kisumu renovated a storage building to use as a large chapel to hold the many worshippers who crowded the priory's small chapel for Mass. The friars' retreat center in Kisumu has been an apostolate for the last two years, offering directed one-day and weeklong retreats, liturgical and spiritual courses, and workshops and enrichment programs.Other ministries related to our charism of preaching include serving as priests in our parish, St. Catherine of Siena, and its outstation, located in a Nairobi slum, and at St. Dominic Church in Kianja.Dominican friars teach and serve as chaplains in campus ministry at area colleges and in the seminary where our student brothers are educated. We engage young Catholics to strengthen their commitment to God, community, family, and social justice. Dominican Friars develop and expand the network of Dominican Laity, collaborating in pro-life and social justice ministries and working with street children at the mission church of St. Martin de Porres. We ask your support for the young men who are on the 8 to 10-year journey to the priesthood and for the good works of our ordained friars. They are an important part of our hope for the future of the building up of the Church in Africa and preaching for the salvation of souls. The Order of Preachers' 800-year history of preaching and serving in the missions continues.
