Feed a Community in Liberia

Project Leader:

Mrs. Bob O'dwyer

Give someone a pig, and you feed him for a day. Teach a community to raise pigs, and you feed them for a lifetime. Franciscan Works + Liberia Mission, Inc. is dedicated to empowering impoverished youth in Liberia through holistic Catholic education - including vocational training. The school’s piggery is a key piece of this mission. Located on campus, the piggery not only offers income for the mission school, but also provides the opportunity for students to gain animal husbandry skills. Elena and the school’s staff are raising money to finish the piggery building, and build out the store front where students will sell their pork products. Funds raised from this project will allow Francis Works + Liberia Mission to increase the sustainability of its programs and ensure its services for the future. Help teach and feed a community for a lifetime.

Here is a final update from Alpha who runs the piggery in Liberia! Thank you again for everyone's generous support and helping us reach our goal.\r\n\r\nFrom Alpha:\r\n\r\nThe piggery is the biggest component of the microbusiness at Liberia Mission. We have 45 pigs of which 15 sows are pregnant. We are expecting an exponential increase in the number of pigs within a few weeks.\r\n\r\nIn addition to all 53 residential beneficiaries, 10 specific students are receiving advanced trainings through the piggery. These students manage the operation (nutrition, medication, sanitation and reproduction) of the piggery while acquiring some basics skills for high school as well as community engagement. \r\n\r\nThe butcher shop that was opened in January has generated over $3,500.00 from the Expat and the Local communities. The shop is promoting interactive relationship with the students and some great local and international communities.\r\n\r\nWe are grateful to our sponsors and supporters for their generous commitment to the program. The microbusiness continues to provide fundamental educational training and skills development for the beneficiaries of the program. The microbusiness also provides LMI program (kitchen) with natural and humanely-raised pigs, cattle and vegetable products while also generating income. Thank you!
