Improve Education in Haiti

Project Leader:

Sister Michel Emilienne

Eliminating illiteracy is a top human rights priority in Haiti. One in two Haitian teenagers is illiterate. The quality of public education is unfortunately very low, and 90 percent of succeeding schools are private and charge expensive school tuitions that only the rich can afford. More than 200,000 children do not attend primary school, let alone high school. Each year in Cite Militaire, Haiti, 50 smart, hardworking but poor children graduate from 9th grade with little or no opportunity to end their life of poverty. The Daughters of Mary Help of Christians believe the lives of these 50 children can be changed by providing two more years of high school education. The sisters are asking for your help to extend their high-quality, affordable K - 9th grade school in Cite Militaire to include 10th - 12th grades. They need $20,000 to expand the existing school. Give $25 so 50 students each year can gain stable, better-paying employment and improve their entire community.

March 2023: The inaugural class of 12th graders started in 2022. Then in the fall 2023, they will become the first class of 13th graders (Haitian high school consists of 10th - 13th grades). At that point, the dream of a full four-year high school curricula being offered at the School of the Infant Jesus will be complete. So far, the high school students have been crammed into the available spaces such as the orphanage study area. Wide-spread violence by gangs in Port-au-Prince made it too dangerous for a construction project. Instead, the opportunity of high school classes is due to the love and determination of the Salesian Sisters who couldn't say no to the hopes of their students. This summer, they must build a classroom for the 13th graders, though, as there is no room otherwise. Thank you for your generosity and prayers of support. Someday, they hope for a full two-story building complete with lab, library and computer facility.

THANK YOU for supporting this project. Gangs are making life very difficult in Haiti at this time. Some of the children at the School of the Infant Jesus come from the neighborhoods of Cite Soleil and Pele where even the police won't enter because they are out-gunned. But, the School of the Infant Jesus remains open with 700 courageous, determined students attending each day. Your kind donations toward a high school give them the hope of continuing past the 9th grade. Education is the key to escaping their poverty.
