Scholarships for Vocational Students

Project Leader:

Reverend Francis Chisembe Chishala

Charles Lwanga College of Education is a Jesuit-run vocational training college located in Zambia. The college serves students from rural areas of Chikuni Mission. The majority of students grew up on family farms, raised by their grandparents. Due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, many have lost one or both parents. While they have a strong desire to learn, these students can barely afford the tuition and boarding fees. The Jesuits offer annual scholarships and receive some government funding. However, every year the number of students who need help surpasses the school’s ability to help. In 2018, the Jesuits funded $15,000 in scholarships – helping 23 students. With help from MISSIO, the Jesuits hope to educate more young men and women, providing them with technical skills to help them succeed and become leaders in their communities.

With a group of Alumni on 05th June 2021, just two days after the feast of the Ugandan Martyrs of which the college is named as St. Charles Lwanga, all roads led to Chikuni Mission where we donated paint amounting to $850 (130 lts) to the college. The college staff and the students community received us as we held the event to hand over the paint. It was a wonderful reunion for many of the alumni (Class of 1992, 1993, 1995,1996, 1997, 2000, 2002) where represented by about twenty of us. A handful of the Alumni are now members of the faculty. I was as alumni also Chaplain to the college in 2018 -2019 hence most of the 3rd Year students were mesmerised to see me and went wild shouting "Fr. Baby!" in jubilation. After the donation some of the alumni traveling stop by at The Bay in Monze for a braii. Hence, as alumni and former chaplain I continue to raise friends and funds to assist the college and support the works of the Jesuits in training primary school teachers who are badly needed in most of the remote schools in Zambia. Your donation would help a needy student pay college fees ($ 150 per term) for the 3 years training. Most of the student come from impoverished families living in the remotes parts of Southern Province of Zambia, Africa.
