Care for Pregnant Women and Mothers in Nigeria

Project Leader:

Dr. Nweze Nnakwe

Doctor Nnakwe is committed to saving the lives of pregnant women and their children in Nigeria. Using the principals of faith-based community organizing, her organization – The Merciful Hearts Foundation – has provided medical services to more than 100 infants and some 300 women. Their ongoing work helps reduce the number of deaths due to complications during pregnancy and decreases the risk of passing the HIV infection from mother to child.

Hello! I help women to get connected to pregnancy help and am having a hard time finding help in Nigeria. One woman lives in Ibadan and the other in Benin City. Can you help me get them help?

We write with a heartfelt thanks for your continuous support of the Merciful Hearts Foundations’ causes. We also want to update you of the progress we made in 2017. This year, the Merciful Hearts Foundation (MHF) is providing pre and post-natal care and medical services to 120 out of 250 pregnant women who attended the outreach program. In addition to providing pre and post-natal care, MHF carried out a community outreach program and provided medical services to 37 sick infants and children. Among the seriously ill, ten pregnant women had malaria and 8 tested positive for HIV infection. Below are some of the remarkable accomplishments from this year: We are very happy to report that 118 out of the 120 women have delivered their babies with minor or few complications. Ten women delivered their babies by cesarean section. Six women had complications with placental delivery and bleeding. One woman started bleeding four days before delivering her baby, but later died. She was anemic prior to the bleeding. Sixteen women received blood transfusion due to blood loss and/or anemia. Twenty women received treatment for high blood pressure, anemia and malaria. It is important to note that we recruit pregnant women at various stages of their pregnancy between 2 to 8 months. These women were not enrolled in any healthcare services and had no plans to do so because of poverty. We also want you to know that one hundred percent of donations made to Merciful Hearts Foundation are used to directly help poor pregnant women, infants, and children who do not receive medical care.We have seen many lives changed for the better because of the programs and services you are helping us provide. According to Mother Teresa, “I am the Vine; you are the Branches.” “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.” “We are a Pencil in God’s Hands”, Rev. Fr. Walijewski. Again, thank you for your valued support and God bless.
