From 1980 through 1986 civil war in Uganda uprooted families. Young men were forced to flee from their homes and fight – leaving women, children and the elderly alone and vulnerable. Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Jinja became a refuge for these families during the conflict and later for young men who had returned home wounded and traumatized. The parish is surrounded by slums and the needs of those it serves are many. Presently, there are 130 orphans and elderly living in the parish compound. The parish provides food, shelter, clothing and medical care using the offerings it receives from parishioners. Priests donate their own money to support projects and others have donated food and clothing as they are able. The church is in desperate need of an Ecosan latrine (portable toilet) since pit latrines cannot be built due to the swampy conditions of the surrounding area. There is also need for bedding, more efficient lighting, school and medical supplies. Every donation makes a difference.
